Last night I had a crazy dream. I dreamt that I was working really hard at getting Ollie an FM system at school. For those of you unfamiliar with an FM system, it’s basically an extra device that is synced up to a persons hearing aid or cochlear implant. The teacher or presenter in the classroom wears a microphone and that sound goes directly into the person with the hearing loss’ ear. They help tremendously when it comes to fatigue and hearing clearly!
So I was trying to get Ollie an FM system and I found out that my husband had told everyone that it wasn’t necessary and that Ollie would be fine without it (just a dream! Not in real life…). I was super ticked. How could he say that? Of course Ollie needs this! I was already getting a ton of resistance from the school and so this really hurt my case!
But not to worry, somehow I met Nyle DiMarco and we became buddies. He had a kid and I had a kid. We would get together and take care of our littles ones. He got to know Ollie and wanted to help us. After one very gentle kiss (and a very confused me…. you know when you’re married and you kiss someone in your dreams and it feels so right but so wrong?!), he went to the school and straightened everything out! Problem solved. Ollie had the FM system that was much needed, and I had my new found love, Nyle DiMarco….
I woke up in a blurry state of confusion! What on earth?! I was SO grateful to see my hubby sleeping there! The fog began to clear. I had not in fact kissed Nyle. My husband does in fact help me with Ollie and his needs. Where did that dream come from?! To be honest, there have been no arguments in a long time over what Ollie does and doesn’t need. Ollie recently got an FM system at school with no fuss! He’s well on his way to mastering this new technology. I think it’s possible the dream had taken seed a couple weeks ago when I was trying to look up “Deaf guy on Dancing with the Stars.” I rarely watch TV and had heard from a friend that there was an awesome man that was trying to help change laws for Deaf people. (Link can be found here) I didn’t know his name so I was just googling “Deaf guy on Dancing with the Stars”. I came across his website and oh my goodness. I think when my friend was describing this awesome man, she may have meant good looking man 😉 I tastefully found the information that I needed and realized that what he is fighting for is incredible. This gentleman is already doing big things for the Deaf Community and the sky is the limit for him.
But back to the real reason I’m talking about this… I’m so happy to have stumbled upon the site! When you have time, take a look at it. It brings up some really good questions.
- Is ASL a basic human right for Deaf babies?
- Should it be mandatory to learn?
- Where should parents be able to find these kind of materials? ASL and English supported classes?
And my personal question to you parents, what do you find is the most helpful tool in giving your Deaf baby language?
I invite those of you with D/HH babies to post comments below! I’d love to hear what you think!
And for any of you concerned about my poor hubby… Nels is cream of the crop and I love him dearly. I told him my dream as he was selflessly checking MY head for lice because we had just found that one of our kiddos had it! He teased and said that he had never ever experienced kissing anyone else but me in a dream (wink wink).
Let’s be honest people!
