Today I’d like to introduce you to what I believe is one of the very best therapies in the whole world. I have found it to be incredibly meaningful in Ollie’s life.
When Ollie was just eight months old, a friend told me about ABM (Anat Baniel Method). And not only did she tell me about ABM, she asked if I wanted to travel with her and her child (who has cerebral palsy) to Bend, Oregon to go to the closest practitioner. I was really excited about what her son had been experiencing so I hopped in the car with her and we took our babies on a 2 hour drive.
(Picture shows Ollie at 2, propped up at the couch)
When I met Kathy she explained that the therapy is very involved with the brain. It’s very different from traditional therapy.
The Anat Baniel Method was created by a brilliant woman named Anat. She studied under Dr. Feldenkrais and went on to work specifically with special needs children.
After Ollie’s first 2 lessons, I witnessed him roll over for the first time unassisted. Typically developing babies roll over anywhere from 4-6 months of age. There was no doubt in my mind that this therapy deeply impacted Ollie as I watched my 8 month old finally roll over.
I was sold from that point on. We would do our best to see a practitioner monthly when possible. Most of the time Ollie would be seen for 2 lessons in a day, for 3-5 days in a row. It is truly remarkable. If you go to the websites shown above, you’ll see countless stories of kids walking, crawling, sitting up, doing incredible things for the first time ever. The hope that this therapy gives children with special needs is immeasurable.
(Here, Ollie is giving Benjamin (his beloved baby) therapy as well!)
ABM practitioners do not claim to be in the medical field (which translates to…your insurance will not cover it!). However, we have found that doing whatever you can do to get your child into it will be well worth your efforts! Children’s brains are developing so much in those early years and if you can take advantage of those youthful, plastic, pliable brains they will be that much more able. This therapy has helped Ollie’s language, movement, and brain functionality. It really is a full package deal and I cannot sing it’s praises enough!
I am not getting any kick backs or money from posting this. I just wanted to get the word out about a resource to parents with special needs kiddos. It has been really foundational in Ollie’s development.
I’ve posted a video on our becauseofollie facebook page that you can view here… Ollie at 6 years old, is beginning to learn how to walk!
I honestly believe that ABM has played a major role in getting Ollie where he is today. And for that, I will be forever grateful!
